THERE is a strong case for building health delivery systems led by nurses rather than doctors, public health experts argue.
Nurses are better positioned than doctors to "take the lead" in improving health outcomes in countries such as Australia, the UK and US experts, including former BMJ editor Dr Richard Smith, claimed.

The extension of Medicare to nurse practitioners and midwives will "correct a longstanding anomaly" of funding health services "almost entirely around doctors", the Federal Health Minister has said.
In an address to the Sydney Institute last night, Ms Nicola Roxon stressed that health would take centre stage in the looming federal election, now expected to happen in August.

NURSE practitioners will not be able to prescribe, treat or refer patients under Medicare without the involvement of doctors under new rules released by the Federal Government.
It has taken over 12 months, an Australian Doctor campaign backed by more than 700 GPs and the work of an advisory group for the government to release details of the collaborative arrangements that must be in place for nurse practitioners to access Medicare.

In a world first - the Centre for Remote Health's (CRH) Master of Remote Health Practice: Nurse Practitioner Program is set to deliver speciality nurse practitioners to work in Remote and Aboriginal Health in Australia.
Developed collaboratively by Flinders University and the Council of Remote Area Nurses of Australia (CRANA Plus), the nurse practitioner program has received full accreditation from the NT Nursing and Midwifery Board for five years.
