e-Health Records Blueprint released as National Health Reform continues to deliver

A national blueprint for the development of e-health records ready for their 1 July 2012 launch, helping Australians to better manage their own healthcare, has been released today.

Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon said the release of the blueprint was a major step forward for national health reform and the development of personally controlled electronic health records (PCEHR).

AFTER years of living with chronic wound on his foot, Chris Schussler has a spring back in his step thanks to a new technology being used in Warrnambool.

The Low Frequency Ultrasonic Debridement machine uses new technology in the fight against chronic wounds and the $100,000 machine being used at Warrnambool's South West Healthcare is one of only four available in the state.

It's not something people like to talk about much - but it's an issue which affects more than 470,000 Australians and absorbs $2.6 billion of the health care budget each year. It can stop your social life in its tracks and cause a lot of physical pain. Many people think there is nothing that can be done about chronic wounds. But that's not true.

This week is Wound Awareness Week. And nurse practitioner in wound management Michelle Gibb from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) wants to get a very important message out there: "There are simple things you can do to improve your healing outcomes and to prevent wounds from coming back. You don't have to suffer in silence."

Prescribing Privileges?
Journal of Pharmacy Practice and Research Volume 40, No. 4, 2010.

First November 2010 saw the enactment of legislation pertaining to nurse practitioners and midwives and their access to the Medical Benefits Schedule and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. The Federal Health Minister, the Honorary Nicola Roxon announced: ‘For the first time, Nurse Practitioners are able to access relevant new items under the Medicare Benefits Schedule and to prescribe certain medicines under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme'.
