Good morning, I would like to begin by acknowledging the Ngunnawal and Ngambri People, the traditional custodians of the land on which we are meeting, and pay my respect to their elders, both past and present.
I would like to also acknowledge the President of the Australian College of Nurse Practitioners, Ms Helen Gosby, the Assistant Secretary of the ANF, Ms Yvonne Chaperon and members of my Department.

From next Monday nurses will be able to provide primary health care services under the Medicare Benefits Scheme. This includes prescribing medications, something long opposed by doctors.

In a world first - the Centre for Remote Health's (CRH) Master of Remote Health Practice: Nurse Practitioner Program is set to deliver speciality nurse practitioners to work in Remote and Aboriginal Health in Australia.
Developed collaboratively by Flinders University and the Council of Remote Area Nurses of Australia (CRANA Plus), the nurse practitioner program has received full accreditation from the NT Nursing and Midwifery Board for five years.

IN 2005 Australian Medical Association president Bill Glasson wrote a piece on nurses. He said that nurses "are not trained in holistic patient care. When a GP examines a particular ailment they are assessing the whole person."
Glasson went on to argue that nurses were not trained to be doctors, a point I would agree with. His initial statement, however, is untrue.
I have taught nurses for more than 30 years, and the core of the curriculum has been always thinking about the person in the patient. In other words, for the nurse to not only see and examine a body with an illness or disease but to see and consider the person feeling ill or in pain or distress and take a thorough history.
