Nurses say a new walk-in clinic in Canberra will help alleviate part of the burden on the wider health system.

The new nurse-led centre at the Canberra Hospital will operate 16 hours a day, with nurses treating patients with minor ailments.

The Australia Institute has recently released a paper presenting data collected for our Measuring what Matters indicators; which looks at access to primary health care. The paper begins by presenting new data on why people say they wish to see a doctor and then reports the degree of difficulty that Australians experience when attempting to make an appointment. The paper concludes with new data suggesting that the majority of Australians would be willing to see a nurse practitioner for a wide range of services now commonly provided by doctors.

MEET the super nurse who saves the NSW Department of Health $1.5million a year by helping to keep our elderly out of hospital.

Debbie Deasey is a nurse practitioner specialising in aged care and treating chronic illnesses who visits patients at their homes.

"I assess and treat patients who might be bed-bound and unable to get to their GP or who can't go to the hospital and wait," she said. "It saves on ambulance and hospital admissions. Much of the time people improve more at home than they do at hospital."

Helen Gosby President of the Australian College of Nurse Practitioners at the ACNP board meeting today welcomes a decision by the senate to pass the Health Legislation Amendment (Midwives and Nurse Practitioners) Bill 2009.

Calls for the next state government to expand the number and role of nurse practitioners to improve an overburdened health system have coincided with an interstate debate on independence for the specialist nurses.
The Australian Nursing Federation wants independent nurse clinics established if an agreement cannot be reached with local general practices.

A GP RAPID response unit and Tasmania's first walk-in clinic are part of a $155.4 million Liberal Party health package for Northern Tasmania.
The package expands on Labor's $132 million worth of promises for the Launceston General Hospital.

It means whoever is in government after March 20 will increase overall staff at the hospital by 16 per cent.
