Filling gaps in the healthcare system

On last night's ABC television news, Australia's new chief nurse Rosemary Bryant said "nurses are able to diagnose many of the conditions for which most of us would see GPs" and was quoted as saying that "with GPs in short supply, nurses can fill the gaps". Nobody doubts the major contribution made by specialist nurse practitioners in specialised areas of medicine, but these statements suggest that the Federal Government is planning to replace optimally-trained primary health care givers (doctors) with sub-optimally trained primary health care givers (nurses) as the point of first medical contact.
