- Rebecca East
- BN M (Periop) M (NP) FACORN, Chief Executive Officer of Australian College of Perioperative Nurses (ACORN)
- A respected national perioperative leader, Rebecca East assumed her appointment as ACORN’s Chief Executive Officer in late 2019. Having served 6 consecutive years as an ACORN board member, initially as Victorian Representative, then Victorian Director and finally as President Rebecca brings unique perspectives and deep knowledge of the Australian perioperative community. ACORN awarded Rebecca ACORN Fellowship in 2018 concurrent with her completion of a Master of Nursing Practice (Perioperative) and Master of Nursing Practice (Nurse Practitioner) from Deakin University. Rebecca’s clinical practice is diverse. For the past 9 years Rebecca has worked in private practice. She gained endorsement as a nurse practitioner in 2014 and is now a proud director of her own private orthopaedic and sports injury practice in Central Victoria. Rebecca is responsible for overall management of the team’s orthopaedic and sports injury patients and continues to practice at the coal face assuming a weekly surgical assisting role with her business partner who is an orthopaedic surgeon. Bec well understands, supports, and represents the broader Australian perioperative nursing community.
- Catherine Smith

- Catherine Smith is a Nurse Practitioner working in both Perioperative and Bariatric scopes of practice. Catherine’s advanced practice career started as a Perioperative Nurse Surgical Assist. She now operates a holistic weight loss clinic in Brisbane as a Nurse Practitioner post her Endorsement in 2012. Catherine’s more than 30 years of nursing include intensive care nursing, perioperative nursing, time in both education and quality roles. Currently, she works as a perioperative nurse practitioner / surgical assistant with general, gynecology, and bariatric surgeons. Over the past several years, Catherine has served on nursing association committees in both ACORN and ACNP. - Kylie Cross
RN Mast NP, PNSA
Ms Cross completed her Perioperative Nursing Course at The Geelong Hospital in 1997 and worked as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at St John of God Hospital theatre, in Ballarat from 2001, but still felt something was missing from her career. She wasn't interested in management or education, preferring to maintain a clinical role. A Nurse Practitioner since 2014, Kylie now works as a Perioperative Nurse Surgeon's Assistant, assisting surgeons directly during operations, particularly orthopaedics, urology and general surgery which was her ultimate career goal. Now she gets to see the patients before surgery, assists in theatre and then for post operative care. Kylie currently works at Ballarat Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, as an NP. She is also a qualified medical tattooist and breast care nurse. Kylie was awarded a Heather May Herrick Scholarship by ACNP in 2019 to further her education.
- Dr Toni Hains
- RN Mast NP /PNSA
Since 2013 Toni has been an Ahpra endorsed Nurse Practitioner gained from the University of Queensland, with a speciality in surgery. Toni has contributed to published articles on the benefits of Nurses and NP’s in perioperative roles, including the Plight of the Perioperative NP in Australia. Toni knows that all periop nurses add value by enhancing learning, that extended practice role also provides a mechanism for increasing job satisfaction. Toni was the inaugural winner of the three Minute Thesis conducted by ACORN from 2020. Toni was awarded her thesis on 26 Feb 2021 where she examined “The Role of the Non-Medical Surgical Assistant in Australia: Legitimacy, Effectiveness, and Equity.”
