Pain Management: Assessment and Management of Low Back Pain

| PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Acute lower back pain (LBP) is one of the most common complaints seen in primary healthcare (PHC), with 84% of adults having LBP at least once in their lives. Despite its commonplace presentation, acute LBP is inconsistently treated by clinicians worldwide. For example, the inappropriate use of diagnostic imaging in LBP triggered a worldwide campaign called Choosing Wisely, which provides guidance for professionals and the public on the use of imaging in LBP. In addition, the Low Back Pain Clinical Care Standard was published in 2022, yet many clinicians remain unaware of its existence and have not yet implemented it into practice. This presentation will:
- Describe the assessment and diagnosis of common problems relating to low back pain
- Discuss the pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic ways of managing muscle spasm and pain
- Explain how orphenadrine differs from other muscle relaxants
