OVERVIEW

  NEW COURSE 2026 / 2027  

The Prescribing & Pharmacology workshop builds on prior knowledge gained, with emphasis on the Nurse Practitioner’s role in safe and effective prescribing, using a patient-centred approach. 
Our facilitator has used member feedback to create a new course for 2026 / 2027.

 

SESSION INFORMATION

Session 1: Practice issues and updates   

  • Practice changes / Legislation / PBS / Medication alerts from the literature / resources 
  • New drugs including lipid management and Cardiovascular Disease 
  • Prescribing issues: private scripts, off-label prescribing, telehealth, time-sensitive medications, e.g. Parkinson’s disease 
  • Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) – your role 

Session 2: Prescribing updates 

  • Antimicrobial stewardship and prescribing 
  • Respiratory drugs and use of handheld devices 

Session 3: Management of disease states and pain 

  • Pain management – medications used in acute and chronic pain, including use of cannabis, alcohol and other drugs 
  • Management of constipation 
  • Women’s health issues – case studies

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Dr Jenny Gowan AM, PhD, Grad Dip Comm Pharm, PhC, FACPP, FPS, AACPA, MSHPA

Jenny is a credentialed consultant pharmacist, Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Monash University and Clinical Associate at RMIT. Jenny has published more than 500 educational articles and is an Editorial Board Member of the AUS-DI (Drug information), Guidelines Committee for the National Asthma Council Australian Asthma Handbook, and RACGP Silver book for Aged Care. Jenny presents hundreds of talks annually and was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for her work in the field of Pharmaceuticals.
