| Overview

In 2019, we will start the year with the Queensland Symposium.  Running over two days the Symposium will cover pain management, asthma, ATSI prescribing, diabetes, suture workshop, acute wound management, ultrasound, musculoskeletal workshop, plus interactive presentations.

The Symposium offers an exciting range of topics from nursing industry leaders that allows you the opportunity to explore with your peers and professionals the application of better solutions for Nurse Practitioners and Advanced Practice Nurses.    

The Symposium will include interactive workshops on the following areas:

  1. Suture Workshop
  2. Acute Wound Management Workshop
  3. Ultrasound Workshop
  4. Pharmacology Workshop
  5. Chronic Disease Case Studies


| Objectives

Spotlighting the NP scope of practice is designed to facilitate engagement between peers and professionals, stimulating discussion and involvement within the key areas of the latest issues.

The objectives of the Symposium are:

  1. Enhancing & Broadening NP Practice education is designed by and for Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Practitioner Candidates and Advanced Practice Nurses.
  2. Interactive workshops where you get to do more than listen to a presenter and you are encouraged to participate.
  3. Earn 10.5 CPD Hours 



Professor Brigid Mary Gillespie

Professor Brigid Mary Gillespie PhD RN FACORN 

Professor of Patient Safety, Gold Coast Health Services

In 2016, Prof Brigid Gillespie was appointed the inaugural conjoint Professor of Patient Safety in Nursing at the Gold Coast University Hospital and Griffith School of Nursing and Midwifery, Gold Coast campus. She has an extensive clinical background in operating room nursing and has worked across the private and public sectors for many years before entering the tertiary sector. Prof Gillespie is Past President of the Perioperative Nurses’ Association of Queensland. In recognition of her service to operating room nursing in relation to education and research, the Australian College of Perioperative Nurses (ACORN) awarded Prof Gillespie the 2014-16 Excellence in Perioperative Nursing Award. In 2017, was awarded Life Membership to the Association.

In terms of research, Prof Gillespie has expertise in quantitative and qualitative methodologies, clinical trials, systematic reviews, and knowledge translation. She is focussing on the following areas of patient safety; surgical wounds/dressing, pressure injury prevention, and non-technical skills in surgery. Prof Gillespie has authored over 140 peer-reviewed publications and 5 book chapters. She has won $7.6 million dollars in competitive research grants, including three NHMRC grants.

Melanie Proper

Acute Pain Nurse Practitioner 

Melanie is an NP with 20 years' experience in pain management in tertiary, aged and private care.  Melanie practices at the RBWH, visits nursing homes, and has a private practice in Brisbane's North.  She is passionate about individualised holistic pain management with emphasis on patient education and empowerment.  She is a visiting lecturer for QUT, a member of the Australian Pain Society and convening committee for the Acute Pain Day of the 2018 APS conference, and the Australian College of Nurse Practitioners QLD State Chapter Chair.


Catherine Smith

Nurse Practitioner Perioperative/Bariatric Nursing 

Catherine Smith is a Nurse Practitioner in Perioperative/Bariatric Nursing.  Catherine has been a nurse for more than 30 years working in critical care, operating theatres and education. 

She operates a Nurse Practitioner (NP) weight loss clinic in Brisbane, offering bulk billed access to weight loss services in the community.  Catherine works with both surgical and medical weight loss clients. 

As a Nurse Practitioner Catherine has provided education to NPs, and nurses on perioperative practice, obesity and weight loss treatments.  Catherine was the ACNP QLD Chapter Chair and is the current Board Member/ Treasurer for the Australian College of Nurse Practitioners.
