The Australian College of Nurse Practitioners (ACNP) is the national peak body for Nurse Practitioners and Advanced Practice Nurses in Australia. Our team is active in advancing nursing practice and improving access to health care through leadership, support of professional practice, education and research.

Adj Professor Chris Helms

Chief Executive Officer

Dr Chris Helms is a Nurse Practitioner with over 25 years’ clinical experience working in acute and primary healthcare settings in metropolitan to regional and remote areas. He received his formal training as an Adult and Geriatric (Aged Care) NP from the University of Wisconsin, based in the United States. He immigrated to Australia in 2007 and has since served on several national boards and committees vested in the advancement of the Australian nursing profession, as well as the Nurse Practitioner role.

His interests include advanced practice nursing, health regulation of nurses and midwives, primary healthcare, cardiovascular disease, and clinical governance frameworks that enhance the quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of health systems. He works as a consultant and is an early career researcher who has several peer-reviewed and grey literature publications relating to advanced practice nurses and Australian NPs.
